The SafetyMax Halogen & HID Low Beam Headlight Daytime Running Light conversion kit / controller
Introducing AllQuality's SafetyMax DRL-2006 modules, designed to power halogen low beam headlights, HID low beam balast-driven headlights, or regular sealed beam glass headlights as DRLs. This product is capable of just over 80 watts power handling capability per side (right and left), or more than 160 watts total. FMVSS, SAE, and CSA standards (CSA standards via HDX model) compliant designs offer maximum safety and ease of installation.
Low Beam Headlight DRLs
 |
Modern vehicle with 3-inch projector-type low beam headlights |
With the SafetyMax headlight product, only the low beams will automatically activate when the vehicle cranks (at 100% power). No other parking lights, dash lamps, or license plate lamps will activate; this saves fuel over time when compared to turning the headlights on during the day. Works just like auto headlights, or manually switching your headlights on during the day, just no other unnecessary lights are illuminated (yes, dash lamps are not illuminated). Automatic operation means peace of mind that you are protected.
So why does AllQuality recommend Full Power Low beam Daytime Running Lights over other reduced power low beam headlight DRL products?
For years, before DRLs came onto the scene, daytime lights on a vehicle were full power low beam headlights (turned on manually by the driver), plus all the other unnecessary wasted-energy lights (parking, tag, and dash lamps). The partial results of a study presented in 2003 by the General Motors Corporation showed the effectiveness of low beam headlight DRL types as shown below:
Partial Study Results
Low beam DRL types: Reductions in Collision Rate (%)
Full Intensity Low Beam Headlights - 3.23% Reduced Intensity Low Beam - 2.31%
(to see the study results summary, click here, scroll down to second study)
Although Amber Turn Signal DRLs outperformed full power low beam headlights by a factor of 3.8, full power low beam headlights still outperformed reduced power low beam headlights. With common halogen headlight bulbs costing in the neighborhood of $7 to $8 at Wal-Mart (or 2 for $11), the lower cost of the DRL consumable is a small price to pay for the safety that is to be gained by using the most effective type of low beam DRL. Safety first is our motto, and headlight bulbs are MUCH cheaper than multi-vehicle frontal collisions... Additionally, people who drive with headlights on all the time say they go 9 to 15 months or longer before having to replace low beam headlight bulbs (due to burn out). We feel strongly about headlight DRL systems running the low beams at full strength, for safety sake. This is because Low beam headlights have an output of only 437 candela above the horizontal, by law (source: DRL expert letter, third paragraph). In contrast, turn signals (and turn signals as DRLs) are designed to have a 700 candela output in the direction of other drivers.

Various sources point to the fact that 50% reduction in DRL voltage causes about a 90% reduction in output. The chart below shows what some competitive reduced voltage headlight DRL devices offer with respect to output:

up to 700 candela | We believe this is also a very strong argument for full power low beam headlight DRL devices. Since low beams point at the ground, reduced output low beam headlight DRL devices actually reduces a driver's safety.
We can prove turn signal DRLs are better: here is an A-B comparison (same time of day, same distance from vehicle (about 12 feet away). Some people just believe in white DRLs, and/or some people just want headlight DRLs over turn signal types; our newest product line gives you this option.

Turn Signal vs. LB headlight DRLs: Both photos taken at about 12 feet (4m) away. The photos above may be slightly deceiving in favor of headlights, because the further you back away from a vehicle, the less visible a vehicle's low beam headlights become at that distance. This is because low beams are pointed at the ground, while turn signals are pointed at eye level. Keep in mind this compares 21 watt bulbs (Turn Signal) versus 45 watt bulbs (Headlights). Also, headlights on this vehicle are overly large when compared to most vehicles. Make sure to look at the same comparison below, with photos taken at a much farther distance. |
This product design makes it one of the safest headlight DRL modules ever, because it powers each headlight bulb independently and incorporates Electronic Isolation Circuitry (EIC) to keep unwanted electrical DRL energy from 'backfeeding' into a modern vehicle's headlight system. This electrical 'backflow' can affect a vehicle's onboard computer/CAN system adversely. We have reports of competitor's headlight DRL modules affecting windshield wipers (actually, wipers turning off aftermarket DRLs via the CAN computer system), and forcing the entire vehicle lighting system (low beams, parking lights, everything) on as an unwanted effect.
SafetyMax also offers a Dynamic Safety Reconnect (DSR) feature exclusive to the AllQuality headlight DRL products. This is a built-in feature of the SafetyMax module when connected to low beam headlights. Should the automatic night switching (which is parking light voltage triggered) ever for some reason fail to activate, the vehicles’ normal headlight signal will be instantly reconnected to the headlight bulbs. This acts as a backup failsafe to insure regular vehicle headlights always work normally. This is especially useful in emergency vehicles that have siren-activated headlight ‘wig-wag’ devices that trigger the headlamp bulbs without actually turning on the vehicle’s headlights.
Additionally, SafetyMax also offers our patented and patent pending Automatic Safety Reconnect, or ASR (as also built into our PlanetSafe Turn DRL products). ASR is a built in, failsafe, zero-system-energy state where all factory bulbs are connected to all factory wiring automatically and instantaneously anytime the DRL system loses power for any reason. This includes when the system has either a deliberate or accidental power loss, power ‘off’, a module ‘blown’ fuse event, and/or each ignition key ‘switch off’ event (US Pat. #7019463 and other US and International patents pending).
Bottom Line: 9 Reasons SafetyMax is safer than other headlight DRL products:

 |
Turn Signal vs. LB headlight DRLs: Both photos taken at about 75 feet [25m] away, then cropped and enlarged back to 300 pixels each. Keep in mind that Turn signal DRLs offer 1/2 the environmental impact with respect to green house gases emissions than LB headlight DRLs do [due to one half the comparative power consumption]. Note Amber is proven in Australia to be a superior DRL color for daytime usage. Also note that more modern vehicles are turning to projector headlights, which are much smaller than this trucks headlights (about 3 inches in diameter, like photo at top of page)

Do not use this method to connect to HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS: Full power HIGH BEAM HEADLIGHTS are not legal for DAYTIME road usage in the US or Canada.
Our DRL headlight conversion kits will work on vehicles with common ground or HID low beam headlights. Add GSS-1 accessory kit (see below), and this product will work on ANY VEHICLE.

+ 12 V | Note*: Many vehicle's headlights will work without the ignition key on. Many European and most German cars in particular (VW, Porsche, Audi, etc.) require the ignition key to be on for the headlights to work - check your vehicle for headlight operation with the driver's door closed [some newer import vehicles have circuitry that kills the headlight circuit when the driver's door opens.]
