(Note that Canadian automotive safety laws typically mirror U.S. law.)

(Compare column below left versus column to right, bullet point by bullet point)

1993 Federal Law allows turn signal bulbs to be used as Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) via FMVSS-108 v.10-S5.5.11-1 thru 5, but there are some conditions: The PlanetSafe DRL-2005 Vehicle Light Control system is designed to comply with all DRL / turn signal / hazard warning lighting laws when configured as a Daytime Running Light (DRL) device:
  • ...they (the turn signal bulbs) "may be wired to be automatically activated" in a steady burning state as daytime running lights (DRLs)...
  • The front turn signal bulbs on the target vehicle are wired to be automatically activated in a steady burning state as daytime running lights (DRLs) when the vehicle cranks and is running via a single power source from the turn signal fuse in fuse box.
  • ...and (are) to be automatically deactivated when the headlamp control is in any "on" position... (S5.5.11-a), and;
  • The new high intensity turn signal-energized DRLs are automatically deactivated when the headlamp control is turned to either the parking light or headlight position;
  • ...when, "if optically combined with a turn signal lamp, (the bulb) is automatically deactivated as a DRL when the turn signal lamp or hazard warning lamp is activated; ...and automatically reactivated as a DRL when the turn signal lamp or hazard warning lamp is deactivated." (S5.5.11-5); also:

  • When a directional lamp or turn signal is activated, the original turn signal bulb now utilized as a DRL bulb is subsequently deactivated...and that directional lamp's pulsed signal is instantly and automatically reconnected back to it's original directional lamp bulb, hence the turn signal(s) functions as it always has (patents pending). This happens 'in stereo' when the hazard warning lamps are activated (two pulsed signals independently and simultaneously reconnected back to two original directional lamp bulbs)... When the directional lamp and/or hazard warning pulsed signal(s) turns off, the front turn signal bulb(s) are no longer needed for pulsed signaling, and this turn signal bulb or bulbs are automatically reactivated as constant burning amber DRLs.
  •  ..."each vehicle equipped with a turn signal operating unit shall also have an illuminated pilot (dashboard) indicator. Failure of one or more turn signal lamps shall be indicated..." via bulb-failure indication and operator pilot indicator warning in accordance with SAE Standard J588e, Turn Signal Lamps, 9/1970; exceptions being when heavy duty flashers are used on trucks, buses, semi-tractor trailers, vehicles equipped to tow other vehicles or trailers, etc., then no bulb-failure indication is necessary. (S5.5.6 & SAE J588e)
  • This device works with any onboard bulb-failure indication flasher that may be present. As an added bonus, now any bulb-failure (due to burn-out) event for the 'new' DRL bulbs, as well as the old turn signal bulbs, (since they are one in the same) is detected and indication of bulb failure due to burn out is fed back to the vehicle operator via the illuminated dashboard indicator, as federal law requires. Three acceptable flash feedback methods after bulb-failure detection are fast-flash, no flash-constant on, or no-flash constant off, all occurring on the side of the vehicle where the bulb has failed and the turn signal is activated.

 All of this, and Maximum DRL Device Safety as well...

 "Safety First" is what we are about at AllQuality Custom Auto Accessories

Common sense says that this device must never lose power and knock out such an important vehicular external lighting subsystem as a vehicle's front turn signals. With proper DRL-2005 installation, specifically including the dual independent grounding of the system module itself, the device retains a built-in safety system feature called AUTOMATIC SAFETY RECONNECT (ASR).

ASR and product safety: what the PlanetSafe DRL-2005 Turn Signal DRL system is all about...

Every version of this high-tech vehicle lighting control system satisfies all of the requirements listed above left, and they also contain the ASR (AUTOMATIC SAFETY RECONNECT) feature - a failsafe, zero-system-energy state where all factory bulbs are automatically re-connected to all factory wiring  and instantaneously anytime the system has either a deliberate or accidental power loss situation, including blown device fuse, system power-off, or ignition key switch-off event.

The PlanetSafe product also has a failsafe low turn-signal voltage feature, for older vehicles that may suddenly experience a problem with a slightly weaker electrical system output at the turn signals themselves (like the vehicle below). Low voltage at the turn signals wiring will never keep your external signals from operating normally.

The SafetyMax products have built-in Electrical Isolation Circuitry (EIC). This offers maximum vehicle-electrical isolation to insure that there is never any adverse effects to a vehicle's onboard ECM computer or CAN-bus (controller area network)system with respect to DRL voltages ever feeding backwards into any modern vehicle's electrical wiring and circuitry, as found in many other less sophisticated aftermarket DRL systems.

SafetyMax products also offer Dynamic Safety Reconnect (DSR). All AllQuality DRL products 'sense' when the vehicle's parking light circuitry activates, and this causes the product to reconnect in a 'night bypass' mode, per NHTSA requirements. Should the parking light voltage-triggered night switching ever for some reason fail to activate, the vehicles normal headlight (or dirving/fog light) voltages will be instantly reconnected to the target bulbs via the DSR safety feature. This acts as a backup failsafe to insure the regular headlights always work normally. This is especially useful in emergency vehicles that have siren-activated 'wig-wag' devices that trigger a vehicle's headlights directly, without actually turning on that vehicle's regular headlights.

Daytime Running Lights in Europe

The obligation to drive with lights on – in some places since the 70s – already exists in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Iceland, Macedonia, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Poland, Slovakia, Lithuania, Hungary and Italy.

In Germany, Switzerland and France, car drivers are recommended to drive with their lights on during the day.

 Daytime Running Lights in Austria

A growing part of the Austrian population is convinced of the positive effect of this traffic safety measure, as is demonstrated by the light-on ratio found by the Department of Transport & Mobility in the ARSB: According to this investigation, in 2004 already more than half of all cars traveled with their lights on during the day (52%), which is an increase of 15 percentage points compared to 2003. On motorways, already 65 percent of all drivers switch on dipped lights (2003: 49%). When the weather is fine, by now 40 percent of all cars travel with their lights on (2003: 29%), during rain this reaches 84 percent (2003: 82%), during fog 90 percent (surveyed in 2004 for the first time).

The Advantages of Daytime Running Lights

  • Particularly for car drivers: Prevention of accidents at cross roads and reduction of frontal crashes during overtaking. Reduction of the seriousness of accidents.
  • Particularly for motorbike drivers: More rapid perception of vehicles, in particular in the peripheral view area, better estimation of distances.
  • Particularly for pedestrians and cyclists: More safety when crossing the road through more rapid perception of illuminated vehicles.
  • Particularly for children: Better perception of conspicuous objects, particularly from the corner of the eyes.
  • Particularly for senior citizens: Illuminated vehicles partially compensate for reduced vision.
  • Particularly for the public budget: Saving of at least € 30.2 million annually. Driving with lights on during the days provides, according to estimates, up to 3.6 times more than it costs.
  • Particularly for all families: Saving of 30 human lives annually.

Driving with lights on during the day is a valuable contribution of the lowering of accident numbers on Austria's roads. Every traffic participant profits from lights on during the day. It is not just the safety of others, but it is the personal safety of everyone. Therefore: Save 30 lives a year – simply by switching a single switch!
