Installation of the PlanetSafe Universal AMBER DRL-2005 Daytime Running Light (DRL) system

The AllQuality premium quality universal turn signal DRL products are not only designed for enhancement and control of your front turn signal bulbs, but they are also built with extensive quality and safety in mind. When installed properly, the PlanetSafe DRL-2005 product should give years and years of proper operation.

Any electrical product that mounts in the engine compartment or somewhere in the front bumper area is susceptible to rain, moisture, humidity, and eventual environmental failure. Therefore, high quality DRL products should be placed inside the cab of the vehicle and away from potential environmental damage. Many automotive manufacturers now locate their DRL systems inside their vehicles, and not in the engine compartment. Any comparable DRL product that mounts in the engine compartment is subject to environmentally accelerated failure and can eventually disable a safety lighting system that is required to keep your vehicle safe and legal. Buyer beware! It costs more in installation supplies and hardware to mount a DRL device inside the car, but it's worth it for longevity of the DRL device itself and the long term safety of the vehicle and its occupants.

DRL-2005 E, DX & LX Installation: Two shielded cables, each possessing high quality 4-stranded 18-gauge wire (each approx. 3/16" or 7 mm in diameter), are routed from the front turn signal lamp areas, through the engine compartment or front bonnet areas, through the firewall, and to an area under the front dashboard on the driver's side of the vehicle. Shielded cable, supplied with each DRL-2005 system, must be utilized to keep high-energy ignition noise originating in the engine compartment from traveling into the vehicle via the cabling and being picked up by the vehicle's sound system.

At each front turn signal lamp, the turn signal wire is cut or severed, and both the wire coming from the vehicle and the wire going to the bulb are separately connected as an input from and an output to the DRL-2005 system, respectively. High quality male and female bullet crimp connectors are supplied here so future reconnection of factory wires to bulbs can be made almost instantly. Instructions also coach the do-it-yourselfer how to crimp correctly, or how to splice-and-tape connections without crimps. Name brand equality electrical tape is also included.

A third wire is connected to the existing parking light circuit on the driver's side as in input to the system (connected in parallel to the parking light circuit). The fourth wire is left unconnected in the basic installation, as shown in the details below (Under the hood connections for DRL-2005 EX & SE models on dual-filament vehicles will vary slightly).

Under the vehicle dashboard, these two shielded cables are connected to the DRL control module. A fused power wire from the module is connected to a ignition-only fuse box connection (fuse box is shown in dark blue above.) Ignition-only means a connection that is energized when the ignition key is in the engine run position only, and not in the accessory position. Typically, this is best connected to the factory turn signal fuse location, since turn signals typically only work when the ignition key is in the engine 'run' position.

Two independent ground connections (not shown) are needed to ground the system to chassis ground in order for the system's ASR (Automatic Safety Reconnect) feature to function. ASR means that when the system turns off, blows a fuse, or the system's power is interrupted for any reason, all factory wiring is automatically and instantly reconnected to all factory bulbs, for maximum system safety (patented and patent pending).

In the deluxe versions of the DRL-2005 system, an operational indication or operational indication/control box is mounted under the dashboard and within view of the vehicle operator. In the economy/fleet versions of the system, an under dash control box or operational indicator box is not included.

Finally, the main system module is mounted or tie-strapped up under the dashboard, similar to an aftermarket vehicle burglar alarm system installation. All module connections and wiring are made with high quality 18-gauge wiring and comes complete with crimp connectors, firewall grommet, tie-straps, black tape and other hardware. NEVER INSTALL THE DRL-2005 PRODUCT IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT! To do so will void the product warranty and make the device susceptible to moisture and heat damage. Safety first...

Other kits are poor at best, come with soon-to-fail scotch locks, wire nuts, no fuse protection; some products even come with candy! Our kit is dealership complete with more than enough supplies to complete a successful installation - see our list below

Above is a photo of everything you get with our entry level kit DRL-2005 E kit for Dual filament, 2 bulb, front turn signal system vehicles:

  • 1 full size roll of black tape, well known name brand quality
  • 1 PlanetSafe DRL-2005 E Pro-Series Amber Daytime Running Light module, fuse protected, designed for 'hideaway' under the dash (driver's side) installation applications
  • 1 AllQuality 12V Dual polarity LED Test light/Logic probe: to test for parking/signal light and fuse box voltages only (LED illuminates 'green' for forward-polarity voltage flow, and illuminates 'red' for negative-polarity voltage flow).
  • Spare 15 amp module fuse
  • Two ground wires, 2 ft long each, with small ring terminals crimped in place
  • 1 extra fused power cable, 5 ft 6 in long (in case vehicle fuse box happens to be located on passenger side of vehicle, as is the case with some newer vehicles)
  • New - Brass fuse taps, ATC and ATM types
  • 8 male and female bullet crimp connectors (5 pairs needed, 3 extra), for connections at the turn signal/parking light wires themselves (our method of connection offers fast potential reconnection of factory wires to factory bulb(s) if ever needed [see install manual pdf link below])
  • 14 'bell-cap' type crimp connectors (for module 'under the dash' wiring connections)
  • 6 'butt (two ends open)' type crimp connectors (spares, just in case)

  • 3 short 'pan head' type Phillips head screws, (2 needed for ground wires)
  • 1 small ring terminal crimp connector (spare)
  • 2 large ring terminal crimp connectors (spares)
  • 1 roll putty tape sealant, 6" long
  • 2 firewall plastic snap grommets; 1 for 1/2" diameter hole, and 1 for 9/16" diameter hole (1 needed, 1 spare) Note: many cars have a large rubber firewall grommet that can be carefully slit and used as a wireway, where no drilling in necessary
  • 4 star washers (2 small, and 2 large, [2 are spares])
  • 1 parking light jumper wire, 6" white (for dual filament DRL-2005 E-DX-LX models [not needed for dual filament DRL-2005 EX and SE models])
